The National Solid Waste Management Programme NSWMP/ EU Green
The National Solid Waste Management Programme NSWMP/ EU Green is co-funded by the European Union and the German government and implemented by GIZ Egypt in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment.
The project contributes to the achievement of “the German and European cooperation waste and circular economy programme” objective of strengthening the use of a decentralised and where possible private sector driven waste management system and circular economy approach in Egypt.
The programme addresses the decentralisation aspect by improving the performance of the Waste Management Regulatory Authority WMRA at the national level, as well as strengthening the capacity of the Ministry of Environment EEAA and the Solid Waste Management Units SWMU in the four selected governorates Kafr-El-Sheikh, Gharbia, Qena, and Assiut, which provides the framework for a nationwide implementation in the governorates.
The EU Green contribution aims to improve the participation and involvement of private sector and NGOs in a climate-friendly circular economy.
The project works closely with its Egyptian counterpart: The Ministry of Environment, represented by EEAA and WMRA to achieve their goals and main objectives:
